I use outlook for my emails but the five commands along the blue bar at the top( send ,insert ,save draft, options and cancel ) do not show.

Using outlook for emails, when I click on new or reply to an email the five commands that usually show ( send, insert, save draft, options and cancel no longer show. This is just a recent problem every thing was ok last week?

Is there a large blank area where those commands should be?

If you resize the window so that there isn't enough room in that area, the site should display a ... menu that lets you access them. Unfortunately, this doesn't always happen consistently. If you shrink the font on the site by zooming "out" (Ctrl-) then more can fit on the bar and you may see those commands come back. If the window size is the problem.


More generally:

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Bypass Firefox's Cache

Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.

Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?


If the above doesn't help, could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

By the way, your "More System Details" shows that there is an optional settings file named user.js in your current active personal settings (profile) folder. Firefox reads this file at startup and uses it to override your previous session settings. Unless you created that file yourself, it may contain unwanted instructions. This article has a section on how to track it down and remove it: How to fix preferences that won't save.

Note: By default, Windows hides the .js extension on files, so if you see a file named user of type JScript, that is the user.js file.

Cleared firefox's Cache, not a lot there but this immediately solved the problem, I do handle my own cookies but if this .js file causes firefox to override previous session settings i'd best look at removing it. I certainly do not recall creating it myself. Many thanks for your help, papa1801
