Monitor Plus, Mozilla’s premium data broker scan and removal service, officially shut down on December 17. The core features of Mozilla Monitor remain available, including real-time breach alerts and actionable guidance. We’ve also expanded free monitoring to include up to 20 email addresses per user.
We know this change may raise questions, and this article is here to clarify what happened to your data, how it affects you, and what you can do next.
Why has Monitor Plus shut down?
As part of our ongoing efforts to advance Mozilla’s mission of empowering people to be safe and independent online, we’re refocusing our resources on other privacy and security initiatives. This shift will allow us to better serve our users and continue developing tools that have the greatest impact in helping people protect their digital lives.
What this means for you
If you were a free Mozilla Monitor user:
- You can no longer start a data broker scan.
- If you had already run a scan before December 17, your results are no longer available.
- Mozilla Monitor’s free breach monitoring service continues with expanded support for up to 20 email addresses.
If you were a Monitor Plus subscriber:
- All data broker removal protections ended on December 17.
- All Monitor Plus scan and removal data has been permanently deleted.
Refunds and subscription changes
All Monitor Plus subscribers have automatically received a prorated refund for any unused time. Refunds were issued to the original payment method.
- PayPal users: If your payment was more than 180 days old, your refund may have been processed through an alternate method. You should have received an email with instructions.
- Privacy Protection Plan bundle users (Mozilla VPN, Monitor Plus, Firefox Relay):
- A prorated refund for the unused portion of Monitor Plus has been issued.
- If your subscription was set to automatically renew, you have been moved to a new plan, including Mozilla VPN and Firefox Relay at a lower price.
- If you turned auto-renewal off, you will retain access to Mozilla VPN and Firefox Relay throughout the remainder of your billing cycle.
- If you prefer to receive a full refund, contact Mozilla Support to cancel. Be aware that getting the full refund will result in losing access to the new plan, which includes Mozilla VPN and Firefox Relay at a lower price
What happened to your data?
- All Monitor Plus data (data broker scan results and removal requests) will be permanently deleted as part of our shutdown.
- Your Mozilla Monitor breach monitoring service, including your list of monitored email addresses and alert history, remains active.
Removals that were in progress at shutdown
All removal requests that had been initiated were already sent to the applicable data brokers. If you still want to follow up on these, you can:
- Visit the broker’s website.
- Look for a link like “Do Not Sell My Personal Info” or “Exercise My Data Rights.”
- Follow their instructions to submit a direct deletion request.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Do I need to cancel my subscription to get a refund?
No. Refunds were issued automatically. If your refund failed for any reason, we will email you.
- Privacy Protection Plan bundle users will receive a prorated refund for the unused portion of their Monitor Plus subscription.
What happened to my scan results after the shutdown?
They will be permanently deleted as part of the Monitor Plus shutdown process.
Is breach monitoring still available?
Yes. Mozilla Monitor’s free breach monitoring will continue, and you’ll be able to track up to 20 email addresses. The monitoring is automatic and requires no further action from you.
What happened to my personal data?
All Monitor Plus-related data (scans and removals) will be deleted. Only the breach monitoring service and related data (email addresses being monitored for data breaches, potential data breaches, and steps a user has taken to resolve a breach) will be retained.
Additionally, you have the option to cancel your Monitor free account in Monitor Settings, which deletes all of your Monitor data, or to cancel your Mozilla Account.
You can delete your Monitor free account from the Monitor Settings page. This removes all data stored by Monitor.
If you prefer, you can also delete your entire Mozilla account, which removes access to all Mozilla services and erases all associated data.
When did I get my refund?
Refunds are being processed up until December 31. If you didn’t receive yours, contact Mozilla Support.
Am I eligible for a refund?
If you had any unused time on your Monitor Plus subscription when the service ended.
